  • GLAAD, the world's largest lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer (LGBTQ) media advocacy organization, today announced that international superstar Adam Lambert will open the 31st Annual GLAAD Media Awards with a special performance on Thursday, March 19.

    GLAAD previously announced that Ben Platt, Tony Award-winning star of Netflix's The Politician, will also perform at the 31st Annual GLAAD Media Awards in New York. Special guests Jaboukie Young-White (comedian and correspondent on The Daily Show with Trevor Noah), the cast of Pose, and Schitt's Creek star Emily Hampshire will also attend the New York ceremony, which will take place at the Hilton Midtown.

    GLAAD previously announced that award-winning actress, producer, and activist Judith Light will be honored with the Excellence in Media Award and award-winning screenwriter, producer, and director Ryan Murphy will be honored with the Vito Russo Award at the New York ceremony. Lilly Singh, openly bisexual executive producer and host of NBC's A Little Late with Lilly Singh, will host the Awards.

    The 31st Annual GLAAD Media Awards honor media for fair, accurate, and inclusive representations of LGBTQ people and issues. The 31st Annual GLAAD Media Awards are presented by Delta, Gilead, Hyundai, and Ketel One Family-Made Vodka. GLAAD previously announced over 175 nominees in 30 categories. Taylor Swift will receive the Vanguard Award and Janet Mock will receive the Stephen F. Kolzak Award at the 31st Annual GLAAD Media Awards in Los Angeles on Thursday, April 16.

    In September 2019, Lambert released his EP, Velvet: Side A, which earned him a nomination for Outstanding Music Artist at the 31st Annual GLAAD Media Awards this year. His brand new album, Velvet, will be released March 20 and is available to pre-order here.

    After finishing as the runner-up on the eighth season of American Idol, Adam Lambert went on to release his debut album For Your Entertainment, which included the international hit ‘Whatya Want From Me' and earned him a Grammy nomination. Lambert followed this success with his second album Trespassing, which became the first album to reach the number one spot in the United States and Canada by an openly gay artist. In 2013, Lambert joined the cast of Glee for a six-episode story and performed the role of Eddie in Fox's The Rocky Horror Picture Show. Adam has been touring as the lead singer of Queen (Queen + Adam Lambert) since 2012, including two huge world arena tours which sold out in minutes and gained critical acclaim.

    In January 2020, Lambert launched his own LGBTQ non-profit organization called the Feel Something Foundation. The organization seeks to support LGBTQ organizations that are moving the needle for communities of all ages and backgrounds, and impacting important areas of LGBTQ life. As an openly gay artist, Lambert has been a powerful advocate for the LGBTQ community throughout his career. In 2010, Lambert participated in the It Gets Better campaign, which helped to bring awareness to bullying and suicide amongst LGBTQ youth. In December 2012, Lambert performed at the "Cyndi Lauper & Friends: Home for the Holidays" benefit concert, with the funds raised going towards supporting Lauper's True Colors Fund and the organization's "Forty to None Project," targeting the epidemic of homelessness among LGBTQ youth. In 2017, Lambert worked with Buzzfeed to co-host its first "Queer Prom" for LGBTQ high school seniors from across America. For several years, Lambert has also participated in GLAAD's Spirit Day, the largest LGBTQ-focused anti-bullying campaign in the world, and also performed at the first "Believer" Spirit Day benefit concert hosted by Justin Tranter.

    Lambert has also been honored several times throughout his career for his trailblazing accomplishments, as well as his LGBTQ advocacy. Honors include the Equality Idol Award at Equality California Los Angeles Equality Awards in August 2011; the GLAAD Davidson/Valentini Award at the GLAAD Media Awards in San Francisco in 2013; the Hope of Los Angeles Award as part of Los Angeles' 3rd Annual LGBT Heritage Month in May 2013; and the Music Icon Award at the 2015 British LGBT Awards. In addition to this year's nomination, Lambert has also been nominated twice for Outstanding Music Artist at the GLAAD Media Awards, ultimately winning the award in 2013.

    GLAAD recently announced over 175 nominees in 30 categories for the 31st Annual GLAAD Media Awards, including the returning category for Outstanding Broadway Production. The Outstanding Kids & Family Programming category expanded to ten nominees as a result of an increase in LGBTQ images across the kids and family television programming and an increase in GLAAD's work to advocate for inclusion in this genre. GLAAD also announced Special Recognition honors for Netflix's Special and for pioneering LGBTQ journalists Karen Ocamb and Mark Segal. • The Mom Project, the leading career destination connecting moms with world-class companies, has announced the addition of Serena Williams as a strategic advisor to the company.

    Williams joins the rapidly growing platform at a critical growth juncture: The Mom Project now serves a thriving community of 200,000+ professionals, while connecting them to over $50M in economic opportunity since its inception in 2016. Serena will work with the tech startup to drive toward a future where women don't have to choose between their families and successful careers.

    As a first order of business, Williams has an urgent appeal for company leaders;

    "I'm calling on CEOs, Heads of People and Business Leaders big and small. It doesn't matter whether you're a team of 1 or 100,000; if you're hiring, are you considering hiring moms? Together, we can influence how work gets done and build a better workplace for the future."

    Already answering the call today through partnerships with The Mom Project to hire and retain more women are world-class organizations across a range of sectors including: Facebook, Nike, Invesco, Etsy, JLL, Gap, Delta, Uber, Twitter, Apple and Georgia Pacific, among many others.

    More commitment is needed at the company and policy level to drive positive change for working parents and caregivers in the workplace. The economic potential in solving this problem is immense; The United States could add up to $4.3 trillion in annual GDP in 2025 if women attain full gender equality, according to a recent McKinsey & Company report. The Mom Project's continued momentum with Serena's involvement coupled with escalating commitment from companies across the United States will fundamentally impact the future of work.

    "It is a dream to welcome Serena to our team; she is truly the embodiment of The Mom Project's mission and what we aspire to. Serena is a role model to so many moms, reminding us that when we recognize our own strength -- we are unstoppable. By joining forces, we will be able to accelerate change for moms in America and champion the support needed in the workplace and through public policy to ensure they can thrive," said Allison Robinson, CEO and Founder of The Mom Project.

    By the Numbers:
    According to the Center for American Progress, 41 percent of mothers were the sole or primary breadwinners for their families, earning at least half of their total household income. This includes single working mothers and married mothers who out-earn their husbands.
    Despite increased family financial responsibility and significant educational gains, 43 percent of women still choose to leave the workforce after becoming mothers with most of the gap in female workforce participation attributable to motherhood and time away from the paid workforce for caregiving reasons.
    The economic potential in solving this problem is immense; The United States could add up to $4.3 trillion in annual GDP in 2025 if women attain full gender equality, according to a recent McKinsey & Company report.

  • Oscar Winner A.R. Rahman (Slumdog Millionaire, 127 Hours) this past week teamed with a variety of musicians and artists for the first of several recording sessions planned around the world in the next month for an amazing new song called "Hands Around the World" in the spirit of the global hit "We Are the World."

    The song lyrics were written by Stephen Schwartz (Pippin, Wicked) and the "Hands Around the World" music team. The piece began recording this past week at composer Nathan Barr's Bandrika Studios in Los Angeles. The song is to be the anthem for the www.hands.world project -- a yearlong campaign to inspire 1 Billion+ people hold hands in a virtual selfie chain around the world for climate change. All funds raised will go to critical climate change projects to make real impact.

    Featured vocalists and participants in the first session included Cody Simpson, Natasha Bedingfield, Major, Mary Mary and Tay Da Prince. Additional artists including Akon have already committed to be recorded at future sessions along with many others who want to lend their voice and celebrity for the music industry as a whole. The music team includes long time composer/collaborator with AR Rahman, composer Kevin Doucette, an AI music creator whose anthem will be used for the 2020 Tokyo Olympics; award winning Polish composer Julia Zuzanna Sokolowska, and KPOP songwriter Daniel Caesar, who wrote/produced Tohoshinki's "Special One." The project is also officially endorsed by the legendary Quincy Jones.

    "As a member of the younger generation, we are going to be some of the last people to have a chance to reverse climate change before its too late. That's why I knew I had to be a part of this project," shared Cody Simpson.

    "I am hopeful that our combination of using music and technology on this project will have this message resonate with the masses," commented AR Rahman. "It has been a pleasure to collaborate with so many incredible musicians from around the world."

    The music and technical team were brought together by immersive entertainment entrepreneur Neil Morgan, and humanitarian Ken Kragen, the organizer of the historic "We Are the World" and "Hands Across America" campaigns.

    "While some people may deny climate change, they cannot deny pollution. As an Australian, I have recently seen the impact firsthand. We intend to use cutting edge technology for good. It will unite people in a positive and uplifting way and connect people like never before," commented Morgan.

    "Just as We Are the World and Hands Across America called attention and raised funds to fight hunger and homelessness, this new project will be a game changer for the environmental issues that threaten every living thing on this planet. I've always said, it easier to accomplish the impossible than the ordinary," said Kragen.

    The song is set to release on April 22nd, which is the 50th anniversary of Earth Day. Alongside the master recording, users will also be able to listen to the track as part of an app, where you can drag and drop options to choose which artists you hear perform on the track and create a personalized shareable version. The group plans to record dozens of musicians representing genres and musical influences from across the globe.

    Later this year, the team will release an augmented reality app as a second phase of the campaign. The app will enable users to take photos holding hands with their favorite celebrities in a holographic and photo realistic form and place them beside you to create virtual selfie chain that will encircle the world. "Hands Around the World." Over 80 Celebrities have already been scanned including Elsie Fisher, David Oyelowo, Herbie Hancock, Lily Tomlin, Master P, Shawn Stockman, Lou Gossett Jr. and Sugar Ray Leonard. AR producers include Travis Cloyd, Executive Producer from Worldwide XR, and Ravi Velhal, Executive Producer.

  • Just before Valentine's Day — which is the most popular day of the year for horse-drawn carriage rides in Central Park — married comic stars Kathy Najimy and Dan Finnerty teamed up with PETA for a new power ballad parody, "A Valentine's Day Ode to Horses," which urged lovers to skip the cruel tourist attraction.

    "These horses are mistreated / stuck in traffic all day long / with car exhaust and loud honking horns / and me singing this song," sings Finnerty. "They're working crazy-ass hours a day / whether in snow or rain / Then at night, they're crammed into stables so small / it's inhu-freakin'-mane!" Najimy chimes in with "Get it—mane? It's a horse."

    Najimy, a longtime PETA supporter, previously teamed up with the group — whose motto reads, in part, that "animals are not ours to use for entertainment" and which opposes speciesism, a human-supremacist worldview — for a video exposing the cruelty of the horse-drawn carriage trade.

    Tickets go on sale at 10 a.m. Pacific, Friday, February 21.

    The show is part of Crow's summer concert tour and raises critical funds for Sands Cares Accelerator members Green Our Planet (GoP) and Nevada Partnership for Homeless Youth (NPHY). "I started my quest for a vaccine and a cure at the request of Elizabeth Taylor when she asked me to fill in for her at amfAR for one night in Cannes. That one night became a 22-year commitment of HIV/AIDS work, study, and fundraising around the globe and a full understanding of what commitment itself means," said Stone. "I ask all of you to join me in not only honoring this path which Elizabeth forged, but one which we as committed humanitarians must end. 770,000 people died of HIV/AIDS last year and one person every three seconds STILL gets HIV/AIDS. Please help us end Elizabeth's brave and incredibly daring and loving task and celebrate that commitment to life!"

    Off screen, Stone's charitable foundations have given life and hope to people around the world. At the United Nations on World AIDS Day 1995, Stone accepted an invitation to serve for three years as Chairwoman of amfAR's Campaign for AIDS Research. In 1998, as her term was coming to a close, Stone renewed her support of amfAR's vital innovative research programs by vowing to continue as campaign chairman until a safe and effective AIDS vaccine was developed. Since accepting this key position with amfAR, Stone has travelled nationally and internationally on behalf of the Foundation and is now their Global Chairman for Campaign Fundraising. She has worked tirelessly to heighten awareness of HIV/AIDS as a threat to social and economic stability, and to underscore the urgent needs for continued AIDS research. Stone is dedicated to this cause, helping to raise hundreds of millions of dollars for the battle against AIDS.

    Past recipients of the Elizabeth Taylor Legacy Award include Michael Jackson (2018), Elton John (2017), Whoopi Goldberg (2016), Nancy Pelosi (2015) and Aileen Getty (2014).

    The inaugural Elizabeth Taylor Ball to End AIDS will include a seated dinner for 350 guests, an exciting live auction featuring unique works of art and luxury experiences with Andrea Fiuczynski serving as auctioneer, live performance, and dancing. Guests will also be given a first-time up-close look at exclusive items from The Elizabeth Taylor Archive including highlights from Elizabeth Taylor's personal life, film career, and humanitarian legacy.

    The Ball Committee includes ETAF Ambassador Lyn Rothman, Andrea Fiuczynski, Martine Laing, Jean-Christophe Laizeau, Kay Saatchi, Begum Sen, Pate Stevens and Yi Zhou.

    Also sponsoring the event is American Airlines, ETAF's official airline.

  • Last week, on behalf of Mercy For Animals, 20 Canadian-born celebrities added their names to a public letter addressing the CEO of MOD Pizza, urging the company to adopt a meaningful animal welfare policy for chickens in its supply chain.

    MOD Pizza is the fastest-growing US restaurant chain and recently opened its first Canada location.

    Among the 20 public figures championing this campaign are actors including Beverly Hills, 90210 star Jason Priestley, Charmed star Sarah Jeffery, Lucifer star Tricia Helfer, Jane the Virgin star Brett Dier, Coroner star Serinda Swan, seven cast members of the iconic Candian TV series Degrassi: The Next Generation and Degrassi: Next Class, as well as former NHL hockey player Georges Laraque.

    See the full list of celebrities involved in the campaign here.

    Over 180 food brands have already committed to a chicken animal welfare
    policy, including Papa John's, Popeyes, Blaze Pizza, Chipotle, Starbucks, Tim Hortons, Burger King, and Panera Bread.

    Chickens raised for meat are packed into dark, unsanitary warehouses, and are bred to grow so large so quickly that many suffer organ failure, heart attacks, and crippling leg deformities. Many die before they even reach slaughter weight.

  • The Noah Benardout Foundation presents the first annual LOVR Benefit concert, a cross-section of artists and celebrities coming together to advocate for an end to DUI (Driving Under the Influence) on Saturday, March 21, 2020 at the Hollywood Palladium.

    The star-studded evening of music and education will feature special performances by Chris Martin, Madison Beer, Daya, Bråves, Nicholas Petricca of WALK THE MOON, Romeo of Farr, Saint Bodhi, Dreamers, Lemmo, El Javi, Ryan Baer, and many other musical guests. Red carpet arrivals start at 6pm, doors open at 6:30pm. Tickets can be purchased here.

    Presenters and celebrity advocates include Andy Garcia, Obi Ndefo, Fahim Anwar, Oliver Trevena, Jason Kramer, and Ross King, who will be joined by several others. Sponsors and partners of the LOVR Benefit include Activision, Billboard, Better Booch, Coffee Bean & Tea, Duggal Visual Solutions, Happy Ice, Live Nation, Lyre's Non-Alcoholic Spirits, Ryan Tedder's CBD water Mad Tasty, Mob Scene, The Hollywood Palladium, Thank Goodness It's Sofia, The Family of Roy, Sheri & Aidan Disney, The Natalie Cole Foundation, The Shallman Family, The Stanley, Marion, Paul & Edward Bergman Family Foundation, Uber, and more. Sponsorship opportunities and additional information are available.

    With the assistance of the Mothers Against Drunk Driving (MADD) California, along with the Los Angeles District Attorney's office and other government agencies, the LOVR Benefit marks the first time that all three of California's major law enforcement departments, Los Angeles Police Department, California Highway Patrol, and the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department, are coming together to demonstrate their commitment to ending DUI tragedies. Law enforcement activations will include the LAPD's DUI simulator and the CHP's Fatal Vision standard field sobriety test demonstration.

    Drunk driving is the leading cause of death in the United States. With a fatality occurring every 43 minutes, Driving Under the Influence claims more lives than cancer or heart related illnesses. Last year in Los Angeles alone, there were nearly 250 DUI related deaths, the majority of whom were pedestrians.

    Noah Benardout was one of those pedestrians. A talented musician known as the artist "LOVR," Noah was tragically killed on August 1, 2019 by a speeding drunk driver while innocently waiting to cross the street in West Hollywood. On the day he died, Noah was offered a record deal and was about to release his new EP. At just 24 years old, Noah's life was cut short just as it was about to blossom.

    "Noah personified ambition and discipline in a world where dreams are seldom realized, and reality drains the soul. Every living moment since this tragedy has been unthinkable, unbearable and unspeakable. As we desperately try to reflect on the past five months with some semblance of logic and response, we consider not the past, but a future that coalesces a targeted drive for justice and awareness through education. The Noah Benardout Foundation will move the needle by reshaping the zeitgeist's perspective through educational consciousness and music," expressed the Benardout Family.

    "When we decided to launch the LOVR Benefit concert, I reached out to Coldplay because Chris Martin was Noah's ultimate role model. Chris personally responded to me within hours, crestfallen by the news. His sincere compassion regarding Noah's passing was a moment of light in this darkness, and his commitment to perform at our event is beyond touching. We are forever grateful to Coldplay and to all of our incredible performers for giving us the strength to keep going," added Noah's father, Marc Benardout.

    Noah's new EP "LONERS" will be released March 20, 2020 on Spotify. Visit the Noah Benardout Foundation to access the QR Code.

  • During the 5th annual St. Jude Spirit of the Dream, St. Jude Children0s Research Hospital honored Penny Hardaway with the Spirit of the Dream Award, which is presented to a person who embodies the mission of St. Jude and its founder, Danny Thomas.

    Jason Farmer and AC Wharton congratulate Penny Hardaway on receiving the 2020 Spirit of the Dream Award
    Jason Farmer and AC Wharton congratulate Penny Hardaway on receiving the 2020 Spirit of the Dream Award

    Taking place during Black History Month, the St. Jude Spirit of the Dream event celebrates the achievements of African Americans who helped build the legacy of St. Jude and continue to support its lifesaving mission: Finding cures. Saving children.

    In addition, St. Jude posthumously honored Dr. Trevor K Thompson with the St. Jude Spirit of the Dream Legacy Award, accepted by his wife, Cherry Whitehead-Thompson. Thompson founded the Sickle Cell Foundation of Tennessee to help raise awareness and support for sickle cell disease, which St. Jude has been committed to treating and curing since the hospital opened in 1962.

    This year's sold out event was attended by more than 250 guests -- including Memphis elected officials, African American community leaders, sponsors, members of National Pan-Hellenic Council organizations and longtime other St. Jude supporters -- gathered to celebrate the achievements of African Americans who helped build the legacy of St. Jude Children's Research Hospital.

    "Since our doors opened in 1962, in the midst of the civil rights movement, the African American community has played a critical role in our mission. St. Jude Children's Research Hospital has a rich history of inclusivity, founded on the idea that all families here would be treated equally. Renowned African-American architect Paul Williams was chosen to design our original hospital, and our founder Danny Thomas worked to desegregate the Memphis hospitality industry, insisting all patients were housed and treated equally," said Richard Shadyac Jr., President and CEO of ALSAC, the fundraising and awareness organization for St. Jude Children's Research Hospital. "Especially as we celebrate Black History Month, we cannot overstate our continual gratitude for inspiring individuals like Penny Hardaway and the late Dr. Thompson for making a positive impact on the lives of St. Jude families, the African American community and our beloved city of Memphis."

    Vice Chairman of the event, Jason Farmer, was among this year's special guests. Farmer helped establish the event, playing an influencer role who encouraged others to get involved. He was recently honored with a Daily Point of Light Award from Points of Light, a global nonprofit organization that inspires, equips and mobilizes millions of people to take action that changes the world.

    Because of events like St. Jude Spirit of the Dream, families at St. Jude never receive a bill for treatment, travel, housing or food -- because all a family should worry about is helping their child live. • The Head and Neck Cancer Alliance (HNCA) has selected voice actor Rob Paulsen as its official spokesperson for 2020.

    Paulsen will serve as the face and voice of HNCA's Oral, Head and Neck Cancer Awareness Program (OHANCA), which celebrates its 22nd year in 2020.

    The cornerstone of the annual initiative is Oral, Head and Neck Cancer Awareness Week, scheduled for April 13-19, when dozens of free oral, head and neck cancer screenings and awareness programs take place around the world.

    Rob Paulsen is known for voicing some of the most iconic cartoon characters of all-time. His voice has been featured in series such as Animaniacs, Pinky and the Brain, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, and Jimmy Neutron: Boy Genius. Paulsen will now use his famous voice to help raise awareness of oral, head and neck cancer, encourage those at risk to get screened for oral cancer, and promote the importance of early detection and prevention via HPV vaccination.

    Diagnosed with HPV-attributed stage III squamous cell carcinoma in 2016, Paulsen faced terrifying uncertainty as a voice actor confronting throat cancer. "The doctors said, 'We're pretty sure we can cure you, but first, we almost have to kill you.' The treatment is brutal," explained Paulsen. "They could cure me, but they couldn't guarantee that my voice would survive. They said I'd be able to speak, but they couldn't guarantee I'd still be able to make a living as a voice actor. Their job, they said, was to save me, not my career."

    Paulsen battled through an aggressive treatment regimen and is now cancer free—and still doing the voice work he loves so much. As a throat cancer survivor, his role as HNCA's spokesperson is deeply personal. "I'm so fortunate because I can not only continue to make a living, but I can make a difference, and I can't wait to use that on the biggest scale that I can."

    "We're so excited for the opportunity to work with Rob," said Amanda Hollinger, HNCA Executive Director. "He's passionate about making a difference, about saving lives and offering hope and positivity to those fighting oral, head and neck cancer. If anyone can give a voice to the cause of oral, head and neck cancer awareness, it's Rob and all those lovable characters he brings to life."

    In addition to partnering with HNCA for its 2020 awareness campaign, Paulsen is also a proud first-time author. His memoir, Voice Lessons, was released recently and chronicles his career, his cancer battle, and how his many famous voices have inspired him and those around him to find the joy in every day. Learn more or purchase his book here.

    The Head and Neck Cancer Alliance's Oral, Head and Neck Cancer Awareness (OHANCA) program is an annual, year-long campaign to educate the public about oral, head and neck cancers. HNCA works closely with local hospitals, clinics, and medical centers to provide free oral, head and neck cancer screenings for communities throughout the US and abroad. In 2019, there were 270 screenings hosted in 40 U.S. States and 18 countries. The goal of the initiative is to encourage adults who are at high risk for oral, head and neck cancer to take advantage of the free screenings. The key message of the campaign is that early diagnosis is key to successful treatment of these types of cancers. For more information, please visit www.headandneck.org..

  • The Michael J. Fox Foundation for Parkinson's Research (MJFF) has unveiled the redesign of Fox Trial Finder — the Foundation's online tool to match patients and families to Parkinson's clinical studies that need them.

    Originally launched in July 2011, Fox Trial Finder now aims to provide users — the more than 91,000 patient and family participants to date — with a simplified experience to more easily find opportunities to advance breakthroughs in Parkinson's treatments and ultimately a cure.

    Across all research, 85 percent of trials face delays and 30 percent never get off the ground due to a lack of volunteers. Fox Trial Finder lists all actively recruiting Parkinson's and atypical parkinsonism studies — both interventional trials that test new therapies and observational studies that examine health and disease. Using an intuitive, customizable search feature, prospective participants can use the tool to perform a guided search to find studies they may be eligible to join in their area. With no registration or fees required, participants then instantly and directly connect with research teams via phone or email.

    "Whether you're new to clinical trials or you've been participating in them for years, the new Fox Trial Finder is here to help better connect patients and families to research," said MJFF Deputy CEO Sohini Chowdhury. "We heard our community's feedback and redesigned the tool to better fit their needs. Using state-of-the-art technology, Fox Trial Finder will create onramps for people to connect with trials that urgently need them. In doing so, we can reduce the burden of recruitment and help bring new treatments to patients faster."

    As part of its commitment to increase the flow of participants into clinical studies, The Michael J. Fox Foundation continues to build practical, user-friendly resources to help more people get involved. The new Fox Trial Finder currently houses more than 500 actively recruiting studies from 40 countries. And since the platform's original launch nearly a decade ago, more than 1,600 research teams have used the tool to expand outreach and connect with potential volunteers. By using the Fox Trial Finder platform, the Phase III STEADY-PD trial — a National Institutes of Health-funded study to evaluate the potential of repurposing isradipine for Parkinson's — completed recruitment of newly diagnosed individuals six months ahead of schedule.

    "When I was newly diagnosed with Parkinson's, I was in search of a way to get involved with research. Simply put, I wanted to help find a cure," said MJFF Patient Council member Claudia Revilla of Peoria, Illinois. "Fox Trial Finder provided me with an accessible and user-friendly resource to take that first step toward research. If thousands more people volunteer for clinical studies, we can get closer to the answers that we're seeking about how to cure the disease."

    New features of Fox Trial Finder include:
    Intuitive design for desktop, tablet and mobile devices — allowing users to navigate and browse clinical studies
    Simplified guided search for eligible studies based on willingness to travel, health history, diagnosis, etc.
    No registration or profile creation required to take part
    Easy-to-use experience directly connecting interested participants to research teams
    Optional email signup for alerts about new studies
    Increasing ease-of-use for multiple languages powered by Google Translate. To date, languages available include Arabic, Bengali, Chinese (Simplified), French, German, Gujarati, Hindi, Italian, Japanese, Javanese, Korean, Portuguese, Punjabi, Russian, Spanish

    Fox Trial Finder's new technology is provided by WCG iConnect, the world's leading provider of solutions that measurably improve the quality and efficiency of clinical research to support thousands of trials worldwide.

    As the world's largest nonprofit funder of Parkinson's research, The Michael J. Fox Foundation is dedicated to accelerating a cure for Parkinson's disease and improved therapies for those living with the condition today. The Foundation pursues its goals through an aggressively funded, highly targeted research program coupled with active global engagement of scientists, Parkinson's patients, business leaders, clinical trial participants, donors and volunteers. In addition to funding more than $900 million in research to date, the Foundation has fundamentally altered the trajectory of progress toward a cure. Operating at the hub of worldwide Parkinson's research, the Foundation forges groundbreaking collaborations with industry leaders, academic scientists and government research funders; increases the flow of participants into Parkinson's disease clinical trials with its online tool, Fox Trial Finder; promotes Parkinson's awareness through high-profile advocacy, events and outreach; and coordinates the grassroots involvement of thousands of Team Fox members around the world.

  • Mohamed Salah has become the first Ambassador for Instant Network Schools – which connect refugee and host country students to a quality digital education – as the programme prepares to expand into his home country of Egypt for the first time.

    Instant Network Schools was set up in 2013 by Vodafone Foundation and UNHCR, the UN Refugee Agency, to give young refugees, host communities and their teachers access to digital learning content and the internet, improving the quality of education in some of the most marginalised communities in Africa.

    To date, the programme has benefited over 86,500 students and 1,000 teachers ensuring that refugees and children from the communities that host them have access to accredited, quality, and relevant learning opportunities.

    There are 36 Instant Network Schools currently operating across eight refugee camps in Kenya, Tanzania, the Democratic Republic of Congo and South Sudan.
    Vodafone Foundation and UNHCR are jointly investing €26 million to expand the programme to benefit 500,000 refugee and host community students and 10,000 teachers.

    By 2025, 255 new Instant Network Schools will be opened, including 20 schools planned this year.
    Mr Salah will visit some of the schools supported by the programme and will help to raise awareness of the need and importance of quality education for refugee children and for more investment in digital technology that provides a connection to the outside world and gives students a chance to shape their own futures.

    Mohamed Salah said:"I'm partnering with Vodafone Foundation and UNHCR to close the gap between the education available to refugees and their peers living in settled communities. Instant Network Schools is an important initiative that I am proud to represent which is transforming learning for a generation of young people across sub-Saharan Africa and soon also in my home country, Egypt."

    Andrew Dunnett, Vodafone's Group Director of Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), Sustainable Business and Foundations, said:"Over 50% of the world's 70.8 million displaced people are children and they can spend their entire schooling in refugee camps with limited access to a quality education. Mohamed Salah shares our passion about the importance of education as a pivotal building block for personal and societal development and will help us to promote and expand the Instant Network Schools programme."

    Dominique Hyde, UNHCR's Director of External Relations said: "We are very proud of our long-term partnership with the Vodafone Foundation, and we are delighted to welcome Mohamed Salah as Ambassador of UNHCR and Vodafone's Instant Network Schools programme. On and off the football field, Mohamed is a positive and inspirational role model for youth all around the world. His optimism and passion perfectly align with the Instant Network Schools programme. Connected education brings hope to refugee youth, giving them the inspiration, motivation and opportunity to achieve a better future."

    Mr Salah, who was named by Time Magazine in 2019 as one of the 100 most influential people in the world, is well known for his philanthropy in a range of areas including education.

    Mr Salah has been a brand ambassador for Vodafone Egypt since the end of 2017 and has fronted the company's brand advertising campaigns ever since. In 2018, Vodafone Egypt launched the ‘Mo Salah World' promotional price plan which offered customers 11 free voice minutes every time he scored a goal.

    Instant Network Schools

    An Instant Network School transforms an existing classroom into an online hub for learning, complete with internet connectivity, sustainable solar power and a robust teacher training programme.

    At the heart of an Instant Network School is technology provided by Vodafone Foundation, the Instant Classroom, a digital ‘school in a box' that can be set up in a matter of minutes. It includes:

    25 tablets for students;
    1 laptop for the teacher;
    1 projector;
    1 speaker;
    1 4G connectivity/Wi-Fi router to connect to the internet;
    in built solar charging for the tablets and laptops;
    cables; and
    a library of digital educational resources.

    A recent evaluation of the existing programme over one year showed a positive impact on learning outcomes, including an increase in informational communications technology (ICT) literacy of 61% for students and 125% for teachers, improved confidence, motivation and academic performance by students. Wider analysis shows higher levels of school attendance, with examples of young people accessing tertiary education from within refugee camps for the first time.

    Vodafone is UNHCR's largest corporate partner for Connected Education, supporting the delivery of the United Nations SDG number four (ensure inclusive and equitable quality education and promote lifelong learning opportunities for all) and 17 (strengthen the means of implementation and revitalise the global partnership for sustainable development).
